રાષ્ટ્રીય શાયરનું બિરુદ પામેલા કવિ શ્રી ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણીની આ અવિસ્મરણીય કૃતિ. મન ભરી માણો કસુંબલ રંગને.

જનનીના હૈયામાં પોઢંતા પોઢંતા પીધો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
ધોળાં ધાવણ કેરી ધારાએ ધારાએ પામ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

બહેનીના કંઠે નીતરતાં હાલરડાંમાં ઘોળ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
ભીષણ રાત્રિ કેરા પહાડોની ત્રાડોએ ચોળ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

દુનિયાના વીરોનાં લીલા બલિદાનોમાં ભભક્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
સાગરને પારે સ્વાધીનતાની કબરોમાં મહેક્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

ભક્તોના તંબૂરથી ટપકેલો મસ્તીભર ચાખ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
વહાલી દિલદારાના પગની મેંદી પરથી ચૂમ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

નવલી દુનિયા કેરાં સ્વપ્નોમાં કવિઓએ ગાયો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
મુક્તિને ક્યારે નિજ રક્તો રેડણહારે પાયો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

પીડિતની આંસુડાધારે-હાહાકારે રેલ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
શહીદોના ધગધગતા નિઃશ્વાસે નિઃશ્વાસે સળગ્યો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

ધરતીનાં ભૂખ્યાં કંગાલોને ગાલે છલકાયો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
બિસ્મિલ બેટાઓની માતાને ભાલે મલકાયો કસુંબીનો રંગ … રાજ

ઘોળી ઘોળી પ્યાલા ભરિયા : રંગીલાં હો ! પીજો કસુંબીનો રંગ;
દોરંગા દેખીને ડરિયાં : ટેકીલાં હો ! લેજો કસુંબીનો રંગ ! … રાજ

    This is evergreen song of Gujarati Language, nothing can be better than this lyrics, “Raga”, No “Dayro” program can be completed without this song. We also have sung and enjoyed this song many times.

    I am surprised at the lack of understanding about the meaning of this song by Meghani.
    The whole of Saurashtra and Gujarat was ruled by Rajput kings who were deliberately made opium addicts under the British rule. The poet is lamenting this addiction.
    The addiction started before birth (see the first stanza) and lasted though life. It was made by grinding the opium and then drinking it.
    ઘોળી ઘોળી પ્યાલા ભરિયા : રંગીલાં હો !
    પીજો કસુંબીનો રંગ;

      That is quite stupid. Just as stupid as people implying Tagor’s Jan Gan man was praising Britishers. I mean even a simpleton can understand it is ‘Shaurya’ he means and not opium. Seriously, you read one idiot coming up with alternate absurd theory and you put your brain and common sense aside just to feel different from others and boost your ego a little, I suppose?

    આ એક શૌર્ય ગીત છે. જે સાંભરતા કેવાય છે કે શરીરના રુવાંટા ઊભા થઈ જાય.. એટલું બધું આ એક ગીતમાં કહી જાય છે. ખુબ ખૂબ આભાર તમારો મેઘાણી સાહેબ.

    Very melodious but since I’m not acquainted with Gujarati language so not able to understand the meaning. Can any one translate the lyrics in English or Hindi? I tried on net but didn’t find.

    What is it that they were drinking after stirring and re-stirring?
    Also you have to know that “રંગ” in the context means addiction, and “રંગીલાં” means addict.
    In these days of excessive addiction and people dying of addiction, you have to remember that the Rajput kings were made deliberate addicts so that they became subservient to the British. Please read the history. The same happened in China which led to opium wars.
    Do you know that if the mother has been drinking opium, it would come out in the breast milk and the child gets addicted right from birth?
    I am a very old man, and I remember my mother telling me that in those days, if a child cried, he/she was given opium to quieten the child.
